Trying to nail a job in PR? Here are a few things you need to know.
So, you’re looking for a role in PR and you’re not sure where to start? Applying for a new job can be very intimidating, and the search for a position in PR is no different. But aside from updating your resume and writing the cover letter to end all cover letters, what more can you do to stick the landing and be the candidate of choice?
-
Get caught up on the latest PR trends.
Whether it’s scrolling through PR Daily or scrolling through the Instagram feeds of your favourite brands to check out their latest campaigns, make sure you’re up to date with hot-off-the-press news. This not only leaves you with plenty to talk about in your interview but also makes you more knowledgeable in your field, which never hurts.
-
Touch up on your connections.
In PR (and argued by some, in life), it’s all about who you know. So, it’s time to get out there. Start attending events, networking, joining industry organisations – the works!
-
Practice your pitching skills!
You’ve done the research, you’ve landed the interview, but now that you’re in, what do you do? It’s time to put your PR skills to the test and pitch yourself. Start with the basics: who are you, why are you here, what is your personal ‘hook’ and why is it compelling, followed up with a call to action – Hire me!
Not all good things are born overnight, though. Be prepared to practice drive and persistence. Don’t let rejection get you down. Pick yourself back up again and learn from your last experience.
One thing that can never be forgotten in PR – the follow-up. As with a hot lead for a strategic partnership or a targeted media pitch that hasn’t been picked up, make sure to follow through to show genuine interest in the opportunity, also proving you have what it takes to make it in the industry.
Put in the work, and you’ll be sure to succeed. Just remember, it’s PR, not ER!
