A Gen Z Perspective: Career Changes, and Taking Risks
"Change isn’t just scary—it’s exciting."
From the Basketball Court & Pageant Stage to the Corporate World:
Long before my HR journey, I lived two different lives—one on the basketball court, the other on the pageant stage. As a former basketball team captain, I thrived under pressure, made quick decisions, and learned how to lead. Competing in pageants taught me poise, confidence, and the power of authentic communication.
At first, I thought these were just memories of another time, but looking back, these experiences shaped the HR professional I am today. Leading a team? Making high-pressure decisions? Communicating effectively? I had unknowingly been preparing for this career all along.
It felt so far from what I knew. But here I am—proof that stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t just possible, it can be life-changing in the best way.
The Hustle in Local Food Industry HR:
Working in HR for a food business was no walk in the park. It was fast, relentless, and constantly kept me on my toes. One moment I’d be processing payroll, the next I’d be mediating workplace conflicts or ensuring labor laws were met. But apart from HR, I was also handling accounting tasks. From managing payroll computations to overseeing financial reports, I had to juggle multiple responsibilities. It was challenging, but it taught me resilience, attention to detail, and the ability to think on my feet.
I enjoyed the experience, but deep down, I knew I wanted more. I wanted to push myself, grow, and see what HR could look like beyond the food industry.
Taking the Leap into International PR HR:
When the opportunity at Ruder Finn Atteline came up, I had doubts. PR? International? Could I even keep up? But something in me whispered, Why not? So, I went for it.
Transitioning into HR in PR felt like stepping into a whole new world. The industry thrives on creativity, agility, and innovation. My role shifted from traditional HR functions to supporting a team that builds global brands. The exposure, the energy, and the fast-paced environment—it was a game-changer.
A Workplace That Truly Cares:
Ruder Finn Atteline is different from any workplace I’ve known. Here, work-life balance is real. Mental health isn’t just talked about—it’s prioritized. The team supports each other, open communication is encouraged, and collaboration is second nature. There’s no unnecessary competition, no toxic work culture—just people working together to create something amazing.
What I’ve Learned & What’s Next:
Looking back, I realize this transition was one of the best decisions of my career. Growth truly happens outside our comfort zones, and while change can be intimidating, it often leads to something better than we imagined.
To my fellow Gen Z professionals: Don’t be afraid to take the leap. If something doesn’t feel right, trust yourself enough to explore new paths. A year ago, I never imagined working in international PR, but now? I can’t picture myself anywhere else.
Here’s to embracing change, following our passions, and taking risks that lead to something incredible!
